Mise En Scene Overview of the Glue Trailer
Setting
The trailer begins with the
setting of grass and hay fields blowing in the wind which immediately gives the
impression that the program is set in the countryside; it also has shots of
green hills.
The trailer promptly changes to a
much darker setting where the shot focuses on water rippling as blood drips
into the stream and old-looking, abandoned windows follow giving the impression
of danger. As the trailer reaches the end, there are numerous signs of
negativity as at night time there is a car set on fire (fire is the colour of
danger), red flares being set off (red again) and it ends with a scene of a
closed area in a field by police banners and police cars.
Costume
The first type of costume is upon
a young man running who is topless and wearing jeans with his boxers on show;
this instantly gives the idea of the program involving youths. Close up, naked
shots of 2 bodies follows, so not much costume is involved so far but then it
goes back to the boy running who is then revealed to be wearing boots similar
to wellies or the type of boot a farmer would wear leading back to the idea of
it being set in the country.
There are many shots of painted
nails, colourful and black which indicates youth also and the clothes each character
that appears is wearing does seem quite youthful. The costume that identifies
the negativity of the program is the police uniform a young woman is wearing at
the end of the trailer.
Lighting
At the beginning of the trailer,
the lighting is sunny and gives a pretty atmosphere as the sun is rising;
however, the majority of the trailer is rather dark as much of it takes place
in either sunset or sunrise lighting so it is fairly dimmed.
The lighting is also night time
at some parts and a red flare is lit, reflecting the red colour onto the
characters face making their features seem intimidating. The parts in the
forest are also quite dimmed as the canopy trees hide the light from the ground
where the naked bodies caress one another making it seem more intimate.
The trailer ends with a few
spotlights shining behind the police woman creating a shadowy effect but also
reflects on the idea of intimidation that takes place in police stations with
the spotlight.
Make Up
The cast of Glue do all look quite pale and tired which could signify the
typical late nights of youths or the idea of stress from the danger/negativity
already highlighted throughout the trailer.
The girls included, seem to have
not much makeup and are mainly natural. There is one shot of a girl with a
scratch/scar on the back of her neck which would have been put on with makeup.
The police woman has quite dark eyes- on her eyelids and underneath, which
again adds to the darkness of the program.
